So it’s possible for you to have the best experience ever with a Tattoo Artist, however there are some tips to be followed, and that’s what I’m going to bring you in this blog with my 20 years experience. 

 I’m sure if you search online for a tattoo artist who specialises at the style you are looking for, you will find a few online, and you will probably resume your search in 3-5 different artists. So that’s when the decision start to arrive, and that’s when people considering getting a tattoo, starts to choose their artist by prices and location. 

And I believe prices and location are the reason why not everyone has got a good tattoo. Because if an artist is the closest to you, it doesn’t mean they are the right artist for you. Considering marking your body for a life time, would it not be better to travel to the artist who fits you best, independent of their location? Travelling for an hour to make sure your tattoo will be the best quality as possible and you will have the best experience as possible, I believe that’s worth the extra mile. 

And prices are another factor that separates, people who invest in their tattoo and body, and people who does not invest in their tattoos and body. And that is one main factor why, there are so many people requesting for their tattoos fixing or covering up. So choosing the right artist for you it is key. 

Good quality tattoo equipment costs a lot of money. So tattoo artists who care for the quality of what they are providing, will invest good money in their tattoo equipment.

I know having a great experience with your tattoo artist and getting a really good quality tattoo, is not easy to achieve. However, if you put aside how much your tattoo will cost, where your tattoo artist is located, and focus more on having a connection with your artist, in this case having a consultation, and travelling to the artist who will deliver the best quality tattoo for you, your chances of having a great experience will increase.

Hello everyone, and welcome to Louis Santos Tattoo. Winter is coming and it is time for me to get my pencils and painting brushes ready, as I love to paint and draw in winter time, its my pleasure to stay in and enjoy my art.

In this blog, I would like to talk about hand tattoos. Hand Tattoos for sure it deserves a entire blog focus on the subject.

Hand Tattoos, in my point of view, is the hardest area of the body to Tattoo. If you ask a majority of Tattoo Artists, which is the part of the body that is the hardest to tattoo, they say hands. Tattooing hands, it was the part of the body where it took me longer to learn to Tattoo, why is that? Because when you tattoo a hand is really easy for the ink to fall off. Why is it easy to fall off? Because you can not ask your client not to move his or her hand after the tattoo session.

One thing I have learned about tattooing the hands, is that, it does not matter, how good the Tattoo Artist is, it is more likely the tattoo is going to need touching up. Everyone works in different conditions, some people work with their hands, so it is more likely to affect the healing process. Is it possible to do a hand Tattoo without needing touch up after, yes it is, I have done some hand tattoos where it went in first time, however, to be on safe side, as soon as I book a hand tattoo, I make sure the second session is also booked, to ensure I get the opportunity to do a second pass.

There are 30 small muscles located directly inside the palm and the base of the hand. Not all muscles in the hands are located between the bones. Some muscles are based in the palm, but the area that gets tattooed, it doesn’t have many muscles, so maybe that’s why tattooing hands it doesn’t feel the same as other areas in the human body, and it is so challenging to tattoo.

So if you are considering getting your hand tattooed, please bear in mind, the patience you will need to achieve a successful hand tattoo, and your Tattoo Artist in Bury, could have 5, 10, 15, 20 years experience, and it is more likely that you will need your hand tattoo touched up.

As Tattoo Artists we can not predict in which condition the client will be in once they leave the Tattoo studio. If you get tattooed in your hand, and you work in a building site, or you work with food, or surrounded by hot temperatures it is more likely that your hand tattoo will need touching up. In my beginning in 2006, I started tattooing in Bury, back then there was only 2-3 shops in Bury, the shop I worked it was the one to go to back in the day, however I knew Bury back then it wasn’t very advanced in Tattooing, I used to go to Tattoo conventions and notice that, other artist’s were better than us, however the guys I worked with would never admit that.

 

So I decided to move to Leeds, in order to learn, and I was glad I did it, as it was the first time I worked with real artist’s, guys who would finish a day session Tattooing and go drawing or paint at night, that was a moment in my life where I literally lived for art, you kind of get in your safe pleasure bubble, and that’s all you know, or want to know. I had a great experience working with artist’s, but then times changed, and I opened my own studio.

 

I really enjoyed opening my own studio, it was more chilled as I wasn’t working for somebody else  anymore, I was private as well, so people would message me through Google. So before approaching me they already searched about me.

 

After 13 years, I felt like my time in Leeds was over, and I decided to move back to Manchester where I started, I missed my Mum, and I missed my English home.

 

Coming back to Manchester, I tried to open a studio in Whitefield, but that was short lived, as the lease on the building was over, so I was walking in Bury, where I used to live, and I found Odin’s Eye Tattoo collective.

 

Odin’s Eye,  is owned by an old friend called “Sween” he has been tattooing longer than me, so he was the guy I looked up to. I spoke to him, and as he knew me from back in the day when I lived in Bury, so the transition was natural. I was really grateful I had a place to work, from someone who already knew who I was. Also meeting Tony, it made me really comfortable as he was very welcoming.

 

Bury was a quiet town, not much happening, the only thing we would look up to would be Sol Viva, the night club, where I used to loose myself before I started Tattooing. Coming back to Bury to be tattooing, it made me realise the number of tattooist’s and Tattoo Studios in Bury had increased a lot. So it was nothing what it used to be. However, I knew at Odin’s Eye, we would have the opportunity and potential to be on top.

 

When you have a lot of Tattoo Studio’s around you, you have to focus on what you can provide as a business, and we certainly consider that. Here are some advantages, of getting tattooed by us at Odin’s Eye Tattoo collective.

In this blog, I would like to focus on helping those who have an interest in becoming a Tattoo Artist in 2026

The Tattoo industry is in a weird place at the moment, as it felt the high of the early 2000’s with tattoo programs of LA ink and Miami Ink, tattooing was booming, not only everyone wanted to get Tattooed, but people could afford to get Tattooed as well, so being a Tattoo Artist seemed like a Great idea, and the perfect career to pursue.

Nowadays we see Tattoo Artist’s abandoning the boat, the industry is over saturated, and no tattoo Artist is as busy as they used to be, so the first thing I would like to say to someone considering being a Tattoo Artist is, please be aware that The Tattoo Industry is not what it used to be any more. I remember looking up to some artist’s around 2013, messaging them, dreaming to get tattooed by them, and their waiting list was 2 and a half years, I doubt that would be the case nowadays.

So, if you have read this blog so far, and you still want to be a Tattoo Artist, this blog is for you. I will select key points to follow, what you need to believe in, and work towards.

So first and most important thing is, how do I get an apprenticeship?

The best advice I would recommend to get a Tattoo apprenticeship, is to, invest in your artistic development, do art classes, pay for online classes with artist’s that you look up to. Developing your artistic skills, there are 2 points to focus on, 1- Study and 2- Practise. The more focus and dedicated you are at study and practise art, the quicker you will climb the ladder of becoming a good artist and to achieve a good  artistic capability. After achieving a good artistic skill, you will look at a Tattoo Artist who you look up to, follow them, save up your money and go and get tattooed by them, and that means sometimes having to go over seas for it. When you get tattooed by someone who you love their work, they will not only get to know you, and respect you, but you will collect a Tattoo that you love for the rest of your life. Getting tattooed by your favourite artist, you will build a relationship with them, so if you are planning to get a half sleeve or full sleeve by someone, go for the artist you would like to learn from. Every client I tattooed a half or full sleeve on, I remember them even after 10 years. So if you become a good artist, dedicate yourself to the art craft for years, get tattooed by a tattoo Artist who you admire their work, your chances of getting an apprenticeship will increase a lot.

Why is it so important to become a good artist before becoming a Tattoo Artist?

If I Tattooed someone who was an amazing artist, It would be my pleasure to offer them a career, i would offer them an apprenticeship, as I would love to see how they would develop their artistic capability in to Tattooing, it would be exciting to see it.

So while Tattoo Artist’s are busy tattooing, you have the time and opportunity to study art and practise art. You have the time to become a better artist, than a Tattoo Artist who is busy Tattooing everyday, and if you show your drawings skills and painting skills to a Tattoo Artist who is an artist, they will consider taking you on as an apprentice a lot more, than if you ask for an apprenticeship without any dedication and previous efforts.When you apply dedicated previous efforts to what you want to do, everything else falls in to place, and when a Tattoo Artist see that you are a good artist, it means that you are passionate about art, and when you are passionate about art, it means you will have a better flow in becoming a Tattoo Artist, I would say a natural and beautiful flow.

So dedicating yourself to art is the best way to get in to Tattooing, instead of believing in short cuts, taking a Tattoo academy, before even learning drawing skills. Tattooing will come naturally if someone learn to be an artist previously.

How could I forget to mention about Tattoo academies, they have been popping out in the last few years, and they have promised everyone who joins on a course, to learn to Tattoo in a week, do you remember the last trade that was learned in a week? To be a plumber you have to go to college for years, how come in tattooing it only takes 1 weeks? That’s because, so many people want to be Tattoo Artists, and they want it at any cost, so they believe that if they pay for a Tattoo course, they will be Tattooing straight way,, so Tattoo academies take advantage of that. I have had so many parents coming to me, and asking me to train their kid up, and I could well take advantage of that and say OK, it will cost 3 thousand pounds, and I will train him or her in 2 weeks. Me personally I would not be able to do that, as I know if I wanted to help someone to be a Tattoo Artist, it would at least take a few years, so Tattoo academies are doing nothing but taking advantage of people who want to learn to tattoo. Tattooing is a lot more than a Tattoo course in a week, you have to be around Tattoo Artist’s with experience 24/7, work in a few Tattoo studios before you open your own, travel and go to Tattoo conventions, to learn and get inspired.

Tattooing  is not just a job, tattooing is a life style. And a life style of dedication to your craft, in order to respect someone who is willing to let you put your art work on their skin for a life time.

Of my 20 years experience, I would say that my decisions I have made in a lot of Tattoos I have approached, it has completely changed the way the Tattoo looked, that’s when I was aware how important my decision making was, and that’s when I became aware of wishing to make my decision making better, which it was becoming a better artist, and how could I become a better artist? If I learned better artistic skills outside of Tattooing, in order to understand proportion, how the light falls in the subject, colour value and so on.

Becoming a Tattoo Artist, if you have an artistic background it will improve your capabilities in your Tattooing. That’s is how I guide young upcoming Tattoo Artists, I feel like they sorely care about becoming really good at tattooing, and not focusing on the foundations.

That is key, the reason why you should do your research, it is so, when you are going in to visit the Tattoo Studio you resonate most with, that you looked in to,  you will have a better understanding of the studio and what they are about. Directly inspired by the Persian Immortals, the 10,000- strong elite warrior guard of the Achaemenid Empire. Their number never dipped below 10,000. If any of them were killed they were immediately replaced by a trained prepared soldier from the reserve unit.

I always enjoy tattooing Gary, he’s half Iranian, that’s where the idea of a Persian soldier comes from. He initially came in for a consultation explaining everything how he wanted, our consultation is always enjoyable, we talk not only about tattoos, but we also have the same interests in Sports, he’s a big Bury FC fan, so we always end up talking about football.

The space Gary showed me on his arm was a Rectangle, so I had the idea of finding a Persian soldier stood up holding a spear. As soon as he saw the image he was so happy, and willing to go ahead with it.

Gary has all his tattoos in black and grey, black and grey is a style love doing, and I try to add realism to the black and grey tattoo I’m working on. Gary has multiple tattoos on his arm, but now he’s looking to join them all in, I’m glad he can see that, he’s willing to work on it, and I’m more than happy to help, as I do like working with Gary. He has overall a very positive attitude, and that really makes a difference, and it adds positivity to the Tattoo session.

Researching for the Tattoo Artist you want to collect their style on your body for life, it really adds positive energy when you are sure about who you want to get tattooed by, and it gives confidence to the tattoo artist. Not being sure if a Tattoo Artist can do a good tattoo or not, only adds confusion, therefore, your tattoo will be affected. So a lot of faith in your Tattoo Artist’s work, it really helps.

This black and grey tattoo took 2 sessions, of 3 hour each. Gary prefers to do 3 hour sessions, he’s not the guy to do full days, and I’m totally cool with that, our sessions are enough but it doesn’t drag along all day. I think the best way is to work around your clients situation, and work around their needs.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for making the time to visit my website. I remember almost 5 years ago, when Covid kicked in, and I was in lockdown in my flat in Leeds, that was the first time I had time to stop, and think about my life long term, and the more I thought of it, the more I realised, I wanted to move back to Manchester, for long term, my Mum was here, its here where everything started. The more I wanted to move back, the more I used to think, how I’m I going to do it? I was tattooing in Leeds for 13 years, and I had built my life and business around all that time. Things kept happening to me in Leeds, things I will never mention online, but everything had to happen in order to open the doors for me to come back to Manchester. So here I’m, after 5 years, of taking risks, leaving everything behind, to start again from scratch. I remember, being sat with my Mum, outside The Village Hotel in Manchester, letting her know for the first time that I wanted to move back to Manchester, and she looked at me with a surprising and happy eyes, but I remember thinking, how is it going to happen? It seemed something so difficult to do, but I did it. Sometimes I look back at when I wanted to move back, and I look at where I’m now, its almost surreal that I managed to do it. I would like to thank everyone who motivated me to move back to Leeds, including people I have worked with, thank you so much. I have transformed every experience I had in Leeds in to something positive which it was, moving back to Manchester.

In 2006, I had started tattooing in Bury Greater Manchester, and it was in Bury College where I learned English, so Bury has a special place for me, as its where I started my life in the UK, and where I had my first experiences living in the UK.

So in this blog I would like to talk about the beginning of tattoo shops in Bury, and how its nowadays. I can talk about it, because even knowing I started in 2006, I have worked with Tattoo Artists who have been tattooing in  Bury for so long.

The first Tattooist in Bury his name is Dave Heap. Dave is now retired, and still lives in Lancashire. Dave’s tattoo style is very traditional, and I think that’s great. A lot of young Tattooists do traditional Tattoos, but Dave is from the times where the traditional tattoos were made. I have Dave on my Facebook, and sometimes we speak on messenger, and one of the things Dave mentioned, that stood out to me the most, was when he said “ I had Bury to myself for almost 30 years” That shows you how long he had been tattooing. I’m sure Dave has some amazing stories to tell about tattooing from back in the day in Lancashire Bury, which now is classed as greater Manchester.

After Bury’s first Tattoo Studio opened with Dave, the next tattoo shop in Bury that open it’s doors in the  90’s was Mad House Tattoo on the Rock. I believe that Tattoo studio was also opened by someone called Dave, who later started working with other artist’s in the tattoo shop in Bury.

Sween, who now owns Odin’s Eye Tattoo, used to get tattooed at Mad House, back in the 90’s.

The Tattooists who used to work at mad house, end up going to work at Rochdale Road, then for years, until the early 2000’s, there was only 2 Tattoo shops in Bury. I believe, mad house was closed down for a bit, and re-opened by a Tattoo Artist called Shaun. I remember Shan, as he was on the rock when I started my apprenticeship in Bury.

When I left Bury in 2009, there was only 2 Tattoo Studio in Bury. Coming back after nearly 13 years, the number of Tattoo shops have doubled. Theres a lot of more Tattoo shops in Bury nowadays, a lot of better work is being done from when I used to tattoo in Bury.

If I was not a Tattoo Artist, or even if I was still Tattooing in Leeds, and if someone asked me for recommendation to where to get tattooed in the best tattoo shop in Bury, I would recommend Odin’s Eye Tattoo Collective, even if I was not working there.

The reason why is because Sween, Left Hand Tony and Louis Santos all specialise in different styles, and the clients are the ones who win at the end. As the clients are waling out with the best work possible. They have the best variety in tattoo style any Tattoo shop in Bury can offer. Its quiet rare to see that in a tattoo studio.They make the dream team, which is hard to form and build. I have worked with many artist’s in the past and never before I felt like something has clicked so well as a team, and I believe, that clients can feel the love energy when the enter the studio, as its important for the client to feel a good vibe when coming in the tattoo shop in Bury.

Thank you for reading my blog, i have been back in Manchester for 2 years now, and im so happy to have come back, and i feel like im starting to get settled. Im forever grateful for my new clients in Mancheter and some of my Leeds clients who still come to see me. I have been meeting some really interesting people, and when i get to meet interesting clients, and they pick a good design, i think its time to write a blog on my websitre.

Realistic Goat Tattoo

I have previously tattooed Josh, so I was really happy to see him back in the studio. I had previously tattooed a philosopher with a philosophy message on Josh’s arm, his tattoo was previously posted on this website.

First time meeting a client, there’s a lot of explaining to be made about how I work and how I prefer to approach their tattoo. Josh was very understanding and easy going, which if put me at ease and it contributed to a better tattoo outcome.

So when he messaged me again, I was happy to have him back as not only the first tattoo had gone well, but he has a really positive energy about him, I feed off his good vibe and that contributes to the positive tattoo outcome.

Having a consultation with Josh, he requested a small black and grey goat tattoo, I love tattooing and drawing goats, as they are spiritual animals, and they have a spiritual positive meaning. They represent wealth and prosperity. Josh mentioned he wanted a graphic flower bellow the goat, so I had the idea to line it. Lining something next to a realistic image it looks really nice. 

I give a lot of attention to small realistic black and grey tattoos. Of course the smaller the tattoo the bigger the challenge. Specially if you are trying to do realism. However, the more you draw as an artist, the better you can deal with smaller black and grey realism tattoos. 

I booked Josh in for a Sunday in our Bury Tattoo Studio, and we had a nice and relaxing day, the tattoo studi in Bury is closed on Sundays, so it was really quiet. Of course I do love when the studio is open and the socialising part of it, we love the interaction with the clients in the studio, as it’s a busy studio. This tattoo has a strong meaning in words, it’s almost like a quote for life. The quote is in Latin, Latin is a dead language that gave birth to many other languages, including my first language Portuguese. Latin gave birth to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. So even knowing this quote is in Latin, I can understand the meaning of it.

That was the first tattoo I did for Gary. Gary had previously been tattooed in the studio in Bury. And for the style of black and grey realistic tattooing he was looking for, he was was put in my direction to work on the Tattoo in Bury.

As soon as I saw Gary I liked his energy, he seemed like a very genuine and easy going guy. He made the request, explained the meaning a little and gave me the freedom for me to work a design. 

I worked on Gary’s design, booked a consultation viewing, and he loved the design lay out, so I was exited about starting his tattoo.

Fast forward to the tattoo day, I realised we had the same interests on similar things, like football and music. We both shared a love for football and we listen to the same kind of music so it was easy to get along and I felt comfortable with him. That also has an effect in the end result of your tattoo, getting along with the client puts you at ease, and being at ease when tattooing someone, your mind is in a good place, you make better decisions, and it enhances the outcome of the tattoo in Bury.

We managed to finish in one session, however, I was sure to book for a touch up session. When I saw the tattoo healed, I was glad the touch up session was booked, it only needed a bit of touching up on the bottom of the sand, but all worth it in the end. 

In this image and video, the tattoo was fully healed, taking a video and a picture of a healed tattoo is a lot better than a fresh tattoo. Freshly done tattoos have a lot of glare, and the skin is quite red. So when the tattoo is healed it looks more natural. 

We are currently re-working Gary’s tribal on his arm. He had a tribal being previously done by a tattooist in Prestwich, and he’s getting it all re-worked. This project will be also posted on this web site, so keep an eye on updates
