Big Cover-up Tattoo Work in Manchester

In this blog I would like to talk about the last experience I had with a cover-up tattoo. There’s a lot involved in order to achieve success  in a cover-up tattoo, so I hope in this blog, talking about my experience approaching this cover-up tattoo in Bury, hopefully it could help and guide those looking for a cover-up tattoo in Manchester. 

Cover-ups is more than a fresh skin tattoo work to do. I would say it’s at least double the amount of work, than approaching a normal tattoo. That doesn’t mean I don’t like to do cover-ups, to be honest I love the challenge to do a cover-up tattoo. 

Approaching a cover-up tattoo requires a lot of thinking and planning, thinking about tones is a big thing to consider, as the tones you will add on top of the cover up, it has to be darker than the tones that already exist. So the darker the tattoo that needs covering up is, the harder it’s to make the job work. 

Paul got his tattoos a long time ago, so I could see there was a lot of black on the tattoo, however, the black was quite old, not so solid. His old tattoo there was a lot of black on it, however, we would have to see which image he wanted to cover his tattoo with. In order to find the right image for a cover up, the image needs a lot of texture, texture is the perfect example to make a cover up tattoo work. Examples images of that are, dragons, snakes, nature, patterns.

Paul showed me an image of a  monkey with sunglasses on the beach, really fun image, the image he chose it was fun, it had some details in it, and it looked like it was possible to cover-it up, however, I knew I had to contrast the image a bit more in order to achieve the cover up request. 

In this post I will upload an image of the reference Paul gave me, and the image of the finished tattoo, as you can see the image of the finished tattoo, it looks a bit darker than the reference image, and that’s due to, I had to contrast the image a bit more to give more depth, to be able to cover what he had. Depth and contrast is really important in a cover-up, and in most cases when the client gives me a reference, I have to add depth to it, so basically I do every tone darker than what’s meant to be. Darkening all tones it makes the image clearer, it’s good for longevity and it works well for the cover up.

Tattooing Paul was a good experience, he was very appreciative of the tattoo work he got done, that’s a good tip for when you get tattooed, be appreciative of the tattoo you have, be appreciative of how much work you got done as well, tattooists work so hard to give their clients a good quality tattoo, and sometimes when the session is over, the client only focus on the parts of the tattoo that hasn’t been done or needs finishing. Focus on what you got done, understand that you chose that artist to tattoo you for a reason, so if that means coming back to get it finished, as soon as it’s done properly so be it. It’s not about how long it takes, it’s about how it’s done, some tattooists work really fast, and try to impress the clients with speed, however, speed does not mean quality. It’s very very rare, when a tattoo artist works really fast and does amazing work, a majority of tattoo artist’s who work really fast cut corners, and that’s something you don’t want to happen when someone is marking their body for the rest of their life.

In this blog I would like to share what I have been doing lately, I love to switch from pencil drawings to oil paint, the contrast in between the two mediums, it allows me to spend all day doing art, with brakes in  between. When I work on pencil drawings, it allows me to focus on shadow, paying attention where the light falls, proportion, and building a drawing skill, it always benefits anyone as a Tattoo Artist. When I’m having fun doing oil painting, it allows me to study colour value, learning colour contrast, and discovering which colours look good next to each other, allowing me to know how my tattoos will look like before I work on it.

The Portrait I’m working on, it’s a quiet large one, being so large it allows me to add as many textures and facing features as I wish. The portrait is of Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City.

Why did I choose to paint Pep Guardiola? I chose to paint Pep Guardiola due to his incredible capacity to change football forever with his tactics. A lot of people say, since Pep Guardiola has been a successful manager in football, football has changed a lot. Now its more about passes and there’s no dribbling, and football  is not the way it used to be. I believe everything changes, and it has an evolution, so you rather catch the wave or get left behind.

Even knowing not everyone agrees with Pep Guardiola’s approach to football, and makes him responsible for the change in the game, I still can see beauty in his way of playing, I still can see intelligence in his game play and organisation. Tactics is  still a form of art in my eyes, even knowing it could look robotic from time to time, I still see the invention of tactics a form of art. I do believe football is not as free as it used to be, however, football is a lot of more a serious business as it used to be, so nowadays teams play for the result, and the philosophy is win or win.

One of the other reasons I’m working on a Pep Guardiola portrait is due to my love of Sports, I was looking for an inspiration from books, about focus and dedication, and the books recommended by google were usually from athletes, from different Sports, one of them was from Kobi Bryant “The Mamba Mentality” I’m not in to basketball as much as I’m in to football, however, the amount of inspiration that is in that book, is beneficial to whatever job you do or whatever career you want to pursuit, or if you are looking to find focus, purpose and dedication.

Hello Everyone, Thanks for looking at my tattoo blog.

In this blog I would like to guide tattoo fans on how to best approach a tattoo and choose the artist who resonates with you personally, and your tattoo request.

The reason why I have decided to create this blog is because, I have been working at Odin’s Eye tattoo collective since April, and it’s a public tattoo studio. Working in a public studio, we have customers walking in and out every day, and sometimes I’m faced with surprise requests, and it surprises me sometimes, how some customers need a bit of guidance with how to best approach a tattoo studio.

In this blog, I will give you some tips, which it will help you, how to best approach a tattoo studio that works best for you, and leaving your Tattoo Artist with a positive mind set, about your tattoo request, which it will contribute to a better and positive tattoo for you.

One thing that really surprises me, is how tattoo clients sometimes, walk in a tattoo studio, and they are not sure, who they want to get tattooed by. So Tip number one

  1. Before walking in a tattoo studio, make sure to do your research, only message a studio if you have looked at their work and you like their style or their work. After looking at someone’s work, you still need to book a consultation, the reason why you book a consultation, its, so you feel if you like the tattoo artist energy, and the studio’s energy. We all have different frequencies, and liking someone’s work is a good start, however, seeing the artist you are considering getting tattooed by it really helps, as you are going to allow the artists to tattoo you, the more positive the artist is when they tattoo you, the better the tattoo outcome.
  2. Walking in a tattoo studio without knowing the artists work or not being sure if you want to get tattooed by them, it will cause a lot of confusions. As the Tattoo Artist, should not be trying to convince you to get tattooed by them, as a client its your job to approach a Tattoo Artist who will resonate with your request.
  3. Do not try to smart a tattoo artist on prices, I see a lot of clients coming in the studio, and trying to get a discount straight way. Your Tattoo Artist will have more chance to give you a discount, or looking after you more, when you build a trust and a relationship with your Tattoo Artist. If you try to be smart trying to get a discount you will get charged. Every tattoo Artist knows how much their work is worth, so if someone charges less, it means they believe their work is worth less.
  4. When you get tattooed you are not spending your money you are investing your money. And its on your body for a life time. So before going ahead with a tattoo, make sure to save your money, and get prepared for it financially, and give the god quality tattoo your body deserves.
  5. When you want a walk in, you want a last minute tattoo. I see a lot of clients coming in and asking, do you do walk ins? And sometimes, the tattoo request it requires planning. Doing a walk in, you are trying your luck, and the Tattoo Artist will not have much time to make the best decisions for you, when my clients have a request, and make an appointment, sometimes, I draw their request 3 times, so the outcome is the best it can be. With a walk in, the time to make decisions is so short, so you are not going to get the best outcome your tattoo deserves.

Cover-ups is a type of tattoo work I’m passionate about. A cover-up tattoo is for sure a challenge, so I do like to have a consultation with the client, as the client has a lot of explanation to do, based on how I feel the consultation, I make my mind up about taking the work or not. I choose if to do the cover-up or not based on how patient my client is, as a cover-up tattoo requires a lot of patience, and I have to feel comfortable with the client, in order to wish to spend long time in the chair with them.

When you need a tattoo covered, unfortunately you do have a problem. So your first step is to find a tattoo artist in Greater Manchester, who you will resonate with their work, you need to book a consultation with them, have a good chat about your issue, and then the tattoo artist will decide weather is a good fit to go ahead with your request or not.

Some clients, when I have a consultation about their cover-up tattoo, I can see their request is very challenging based on how dark their tattoo is, how large the tattoo area that needs covering is, however, the client is so nice, that I take the request, as they have such a good attitude, where it gives me hope and inspiration to help them. I try to say that your attitude, will dictate how good your tattoo is, and when someone has a good attitude towards their tattoo, booking a consultation, giving me the opportunity to look in to their request, making an appointment, giving me the opportunity to plan their tattoo request, being patient during the process, letting the process flow naturally, having faith that the tattoo will be done eventually, allowing me to work in a good frame of mind, all those good qualities can only take you to one path which is a good quality successful tattoo.

Re-Birth in my life and Tattooing

Hello Everyone, and Thanks for looking at my weekly blog. In this blog I would like to talk about re-birth. I believe we all go thought death and re-birth while we live. And sometimes we don’t understand why we go through certain situations, we don’t understand why certain things happens to us. We can not understand why certain things don’t work out the way we imagined, however, everything that happens to us, is in order to make us evolve, and the universe will have to shift your life, move you out of somewhere where you are not supposed to be. The Universe will move people out of your life, in order to move you out of a situation where you would never prosper, people who are not meant to be in your life, life will detach you from them, and it all makes sense after.

We all die while we live, and the process of being re-born while we live it takes a lot out of us. Re-birth is a tough process to go through, and we should embrace it, and not try to deviate from it. The reason why is, because, the re-birth process happens to us in order to make us evolve.

I started tattooing in 2006, in Bury, and in 2009, I moved to Leeds, as I was looking to make progression in my tattooing career, and try to meet and work with artists. Moving to Leeds it allowed me to work with Tattooists who could draw and paint, so I would spend all da tattooing, drawing and painting at night. That had a really good effect in my career, inspiration wise, and learning wise. I thought Leeds was going to be a quick adventure, that only lasted a few years, I thought I would be out of Leeds in 3 years, but it ended up lasting 13 years.

I did have opportunities to leave Leeds before 13 years, however, I did not make decisions based on what was best for me, I made decisions based on what was best for me and others I worked with, and those who I worked with, were making decisions that was best for them. Anyway, you live and learn, and I’m glad I had that lesson earlier in life, and I evolved from it.

I feel like Leeds was a school for me, where I learned a lot, however, I feel blessed, that I was able to have the opportunity to start again, leave everything behind, and starting again, somewhere where it feels like home. Even knowing, I’m not born in the UK, when I first arrived to England in 99, I came straight to live in Greater Manchester.

Thank you Leeds for the lessons, and I understand that everything happened in order to make me evolve, I’m still going through a process of healing and moving on, as it was 13 years, however, I’m grateful that I’m having the opportunity to start again.

I feel like Manchester resonates more with my sort of work and style, and I feel like tattoo fans understand and appreciate my work in Manchester. I did have a good time also in Leeds, and I met some incredible people, who became my friends, however, for my tattoo career, Manchester is more in harmony with me as a person and an artist.
