Be Your Tattoo Artists Favourite Client in Manchester

Approaching a Tattoo Artist in Manchester in the right way, and behaving appropriate around them, it will contribute to you getting a better tattoo. In the end of the day, Tattoo Artists also have emotions like you, and sometimes approaching a tattoo artist with the right attitude, your tattoo artist will look forward to see you, and have you on top list of their favourite clients. This will make your tattoo artist work with a better frame of mind, and the outcome of your tattoo will be a lot greater.

Not all Tattoo Artists will admit that, but every Tattoo Artist do have their list of favourite clients, and in this blog I will show you, how to become a client that your Tattoo Artist will look forward to work with, and the does and don’t when walking in to a Tattoo Studio, which it will help you to have a positive experience, which is important when you are marking your body for the rest of your life. 

My favourite clients are the ones who don’t ask how long the Tattoo is going to take. And those are the clients who get their tattoo done quicker believe it or not, because they allowed me to work in a good frame of mind, and allowed me to get in a flow. Sometimes when I’m tattooing someone, in the middle of the session they ask, how long is it going to take? And that’s the hardest question you can ask a tattoo artist, and when you ask that question in the middle of the session, it completely takes your Tattoo Artist out of the flow, and it will affect your Tattoo. A good tattoo comes with your Tattoo Artist being in a good frame of mind and in a positive flow. 

You want your tattoo artist to take their time, while working with you, sometimes adding 30 minutes to your tattoo it will make a difference. So in order to get a good quality tattoo, your tattoo takes as long as it takes. So not asking your tattoo artist how long the tattoo will take and let it be, your tattoo artist will get in such a natural flow and you will end up with a positive outcome. 

Some clients make all about how much the tattoo will cost, even before they have sorted the design with the artist. The more limited you are with money, the more limited your tattoo will be. A Bury Tattoo Artist will never know exactly how long the tattoo will take, so how much the tattoo will cost it will vary a lot. When you get tattooed you are not spending your money, you are investing your money. So every session you have , you are investing in your body, and your tattoo artist works so hard all day to tattoo you and give you a good tattoo, so be appreciative of every session you get, pay for it, and don’t complain about how long is taking or how much it will cost, as if you are way going with your tattoo artist, you will be the one they are going to look after it more. 

Sometimes I’m doing someone a quiet large tattoo, and half way through the tattoo, the client says, I’m buying a house, or I’m getting married. It’s like, they start the tattoo, but then they want to do something else, and keep trying to let you know they no longer can carry on having the tattoo done. Your personal financial situation it’s something quite personal, and  there’s no need to share it with your tattoo artist. I got my head tattooed by Victoria Portugal and it’s not finished yet. Moving back to Manchester has hold me back going back to him and getting my Tattoo finished. However, I’m going to go back to him when I can afford to  and when I’m ready for it, and i don’t need to share with him the reasons why I can’t get tattooed by him at the moment. So when you are getting tattooed and things get in the way, like it does, go back to the tattoo artist you chose to get tattooed by when the time is right. As if you start sharing with your tattoo artist that you are struggling to get the tattoo finished, and sharing the reasons why, it will create an atmosphere that you want the tattoo finished but can’t afford to, and I have been in situations like that before, and I can say that it’s not very pleasant, as I my job is to do the best I can when my client is ready, and even if they come back in years to come, it doesn’t matter, I will be there ready to finish the tattoo for them. It’s all about the end result and not the process, the process is a journey the end result is the target.

Getting Tattooed in Manchester in modern days

The year was 2006, and my journey began in the tattoo world. Even during my apprenticeship I came to the profound realisation that, the most successful Tattoo Artists were the more experienced artists, so I understood that I needed to focus on my art in order to achieve a good Tattoo. 

Fast forward to 2025, it’s almost like anyone with the intention to learn to tattoo, has no interest in learning to be an artist, before attempting to approach someone’s skin, or developing their artistic capabilities. And also, original artists, who worked so hard to develop their own unique style in art to Tattooing, are considering walking away from tattooing. 

In this blog I’m going to dive deep in to the reasons why all this came to reality in the Tattoo industry. How did the Tattoo industry used to reward high quality and original artists, to  reward Tattooists with no artistic capabilities. 

I started in 2006, Tattoo magazines was all you had, no social media and internet was not as advanced as it’s now. Every month “Total Tattoo Magazine” used to come out, and the Tattoo Artists in the cover of the magazine would be the next Tattoo Artist a lot of people would be following to learn, or it would be the Artist who would literally be re-writing the history of Tattooing. 

I will never forget the first time I saw Shige, Mike De Vries and Nikko Hurtado in the magazine. They were doing a style of tattooing I have never seen before, and I could tell their work was creating a new perspective in tattooing and some tattoo artists would be inspired and would be following that, and taking that style onboard. Those were the most successful Tattoo Artists in the early 2000’s, the ones who were re-writing Tattoo history. Opening a Tattoo magazine back in the early 2000’s it was almost like opening a Tattoo bible, where you would get mega inspired by the new artists coming up, with new creative styles, and being updated with what was going on in the Tattoo World. 

Fast Forward to 2025, a lot of young Tattoo Artists hardly know or are interested, in who were those Tattoo Artists who made Tattooing what it’s today, and artists I respected, and used to look up to. The artists who came up with the style they we fell in love with, should be respected by young artists and the ones rewarded in the tattoo industry. 

I believe social media has a big part of the reason why some Tattoo Artist’s are so rewarded for not being artists nowadays. Nowadays, Tattoo Artists get away with not creating art, and being successful in tattooing, and the reason why I believe is that Tattoo Collectors or clients do support Tattoo Artists who do not have an artistic background nor create art in a regular basis out of love.

I do understand that technology has made everything more accessible nowadays, specially in tattooing, for those who can not draw or paint, the IPad Pro is a life saver, as the Procreate app can mix match a lot of images, and cut a lot of corners and do a lot of stuff that only skilful  artists could achieve back in the day. I do use my iPad Pro, but sometimes I do still go back to the traditional sketch pad, as to develop, study and progress as an artists, traditional paint and drawing it’s I believe still the way to 

Nowadays, clients tend to go to a Tattoo Artist in Manchester who does videos and talk on camera, and the reason why, is because the client can resonate with the artists more, even knowing there’s a true artists who studied art all their life, and they just don’t feel confident or does not believe that you have to do a video to be a good Tattoo Artist , but everything chances. That’s why I believe true and original artists are not as successful nowadays in tattooing. Because with the raise of technology, there are some people who are not very good artists, however, very good with social media and technology, and they are the ones succeeding because someone looking for a tattoo, are not longer looking at an important fact about getting a tattoo, which is, is my Tattoo Artist an artist?

Another important aspect about getting tattooed nowadays, that is important mentioning to you guys, that a lot of Artists can do tricks with the camera nowadays, so everything you see online, is not exactly like how it’s on skin, or in real life. So looking at a Tattoo healed in front of you, is the best example to be sure if you resonate, like, or can see how good or the quality of a Tattoo Artists work. So don’t be fooled when a Tattoo looks too good to be true on Instagram or TikTok, usually when they heal, they will look completely different than what it was, when it was first done. 

Let’s not forget that some Tattoo artists do post an image of their healed tattoo online, which is something it should add trust to the viewer, and someone looking to get a Tattoo. A Tattoo Artist who posts and exposes their healed Tattoo, is an artist who have trust and experience in what their work really looks like, to have the confidence to post your healed Tattoo, is to be able to know what the Tattoo will look like when it’s healed, and that takes experience, and years of perfecting the Tattooing craft.

This tattoo has a strong meaning in words, it’s almost like a quote for life. The quote is in Latin, Latin is a dead language that gave birth to many other languages, including my first language Portuguese. Latin gave birth to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. So even knowing this quote is in Latin, I can understand the meaning of it.

That was the first tattoo I did for Gary. Gary had previously been tattooed in the studio in Bury. And for the style of black and grey realistic tattooing he was looking for, he was was put in my direction to work on the Tattoo in Bury.

As soon as I saw Gary I liked his energy, he seemed like a very genuine and easy going guy. He made the request, explained the meaning a little and gave me the freedom for me to work a design. 

I worked on Gary’s design, booked a consultation viewing, and he loved the design lay out, so I was exited about starting his tattoo.

Fast forward to the tattoo day, I realised we had the same interests on similar things, like football and music. We both shared a love for football and we listen to the same kind of music so it was easy to get along and I felt comfortable with him. That also has an effect in the end result of your tattoo, getting along with the client puts you at ease, and being at ease when tattooing someone, your mind is in a good place, you make better decisions, and it enhances the outcome of the tattoo in Bury.

We managed to finish in one session, however, I was sure to book for a touch up session. When I saw the tattoo healed, I was glad the touch up session was booked, it only needed a bit of touching up on the bottom of the sand, but all worth it in the end. 

In this image and video, the tattoo was fully healed, taking a video and a picture of a healed tattoo is a lot better than a fresh tattoo. Freshly done tattoos have a lot of glare, and the skin is quite red. So when the tattoo is healed it looks more natural. 

We are currently re-working Gary’s tribal on his arm. He had a tribal being previously done by a tattooist in Prestwich, and he’s getting it all re-worked. This project will be also posted on this web site, so keep an eye on updates

Guide on how to get tattooed for first timers, and for who previously been tattooed. 

Getting tattooed specifically for first timers, can be quite a decision to make, and nerve racking to approach a tattoo studio. I would like to divide this blog in 2 parts, the first part I would like to focus on first timers, and the second part of the blog, I would like to focus on clients with more experience with getting tattooed in Manchester.

Where should I go? Nowadays there are so many tattoo studios around, but that doesn’t mean all of them have an artistic background, that doesn’t mean all of them have experience. When searching for a tattoo studio, you should first look for the artist who does the style you are looking for, if you could see the tattoo healed it really helps to see how your tattoo is gonna look healed. Seeing fresh tattoos online, sometimes it does not do justice to see it in real life. Every Tattoo Artist in Manchester are passionate about doing at least one or 2 styles, and based on the style you are looking for, you should choose your Tattoo Artist who is passionate about the style you are looking for.

Which Artist should I choose?

A lot of Tattoo Artist’s nowadays use sexuality in order to attract clients, that is  a red flag in a professional tattoo artist’s  point of view, and as well an unprofessional approach to bussiness. Tattoos are about art, and it’s the artist’s capability that’s going to last in your skin, and not how good someone looks. The Tattoo industry used to be all about the art in the early 2000’s, the best artist’s were the best and most successful Tattoo Artists. Someone’s look will not dictate how good your tattoo will be.  And someone’s look will not have relevance in the end result of you Tattoo.

 

Why book a consultation?

Consultations really helps you to see if the Tattoo artist you are considering getting tattooed by, understands what you are looking for.

Also, when letting someone mark your body for life, you have to make sure your energy matches with theirs. Having a consultation allows you to feel if the tattoo artists vibe matches with yours, it allows you to find out if you will get on with your tattoo artist and if you want to spend time with them.

Before approaching a big tattoo specially, I love to have a consultation, specifically to find out if the way I think is similar to my clients, if they are chilled, or if they are patient.

Being a first timer it doesn’t mean that you are getting a tattoo to see how it feels like, you are getting a tattoo because you really want it. A lot of first timers end up getting a really small tattoo, just to see what it feels like, then, they end up with a tattoo that they didn’t really want.

Is the Tattoo process painful?

We get a lot of clients coming in, and mentioning, my friend said it hurts on the wrist, my friend said it hurts on the chest, my friend said it doesn’t hurt on the hands. Everyone who gets tattooed has a different experience with their tattoo artist, so I can assure, if the tattoo was painful in a certain area of someone’s body, it doesn’t mean that’s going to be the same for you. Your experience getting tattooed, it will be different from others, independent of the area you are getting tattooed. You have to consider that, everyone has a different pain management, it depends on your health as well, how much your tattoo is going to hurt. Drugs and alcohol can affect your nervous system. So someone who drinks a lot of alcohol or used to be a heavy smoker, those clients will feel the tattoo more than someone who has chosen healthier habits. Your health will have an affect with how your tattoo will feel, and your health will also dictate how well or fast your tattoo will heal. Also how good quality the needle is will dictate how your tattoo will feel, lower quality cheaper manufactured needles will traumatise the skin a lot more than a well manufactured high quality needle. So think twice before getting a cheaper tattoo, the tattoo will be cheaper and so will be the equipment, which it will also affect longevity, due to poor quality inks.

How much will the tattoo cost?

Every Tattoo Artist’s price will be different and one of the reasons why, is because everyone knows how much their stuff is worth. A tattoo artist who sacrifices their life and free time to study art and becoming a better artist, those artists’s will charge more, as you are paying for their artistic capabilities. Being able to tattoo, it doesn’t mean you are an artist

Demeter Greek Mythology Goddess

The goddess of agriculture, grain, and the harvest. While her domain is more cultivated nature, she is a vital deity connected to the natural cycle of growth and renewal. 

It was a pleasure working on that Greek Mythology Tattoo in Manchester. I was really happy when my client requested Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. 

The process was quite long with the planning, we had a few examples of how the tattoo was going to look like. My client was really sure about what she wanted, so we had a few alterations in the process, which I was totally happy about working on it, as I wanted to make sure she was totally sure about the design. 

Greek Mythology is a style that I have a passion for, I hope to get more of this sort of work, as I’m also working on designs to study Greek Mythology art, as I said, drawing is the best way to improve the style of tattooing you are looking to specialise. 

The Tattoo took 2 sessions in total, i booked a touch-up session, however it wa not needed. Me and the client were both happy with how its healed.

We completed the tattoo in 2 sessions, 2 long sessions, however my client had faith in the process and stuck with the process. It’s important to explain to your client the dedication involved when getting a tattoo. So sometimes long consultations are important, so the clients are totally sure of the dedication required to achieve the final result.

Realistic Eye Tattoo Manchester

Colour realism Eye Tattoo 

Colour realism is one of my favourite style to tattoo. I love the realism look on tattoos. Realism is a new style that is still evolving, and the biggest challenge in a tattoo artist doing a realism tattoo is longevity, you have to really pay attention on contrast, however, at the same time you can not let the contrast take away the realism. That’s a concept that has made me think and re-think about realism a lot. 

In realism, you do need your soft areas, and those soft and subtle areas are the areas where longevity comes to be considered. In Oder for the tattoo to last you need contrast. So even in those soft areas, I try to bring what I call a soft contrast in order to make the tattoo last as much as possible.

So I have been tattooing Perry for a while, I previously tattooed his head, we worked on a Chicano full head tattoo. However this time, he asked me for a realistic eye tattoo on his arm pit. I had previously tattooed an armpit in Leeds before, the first time I tattooed an armpit pit was a rose. I was quiet nervous to do it, as I had never tattooed an armpit pit before, however I worried for no reason, as soon as I started, I was happy as the ink went in the skin really easy, so I enjoyed my first experience tattooing an arm pit.

So approaching the second arm pit tattoo, I was more confident knowing the skin is quite soft, therefore easing the tattooing process. 

The Tattoo was done in one session, however, as soon as we were finished I booked a touch up session straight way, specially being under the arm pit, the client sweats and you never know how it’s going to heal.

During the process we had fun, as my client was ticklish, so we were laughing a lot in the process. He managed to keep still in the process. 

Taking brakes is really important when getting tattooed, specially in awkward areas of the body, and allowing your client to move around while they get tattooed, it can really help.

Pep Guardiola Oil Paint

Work in Progress

In this blog I would like to share what I have been doing lately, I love to switch from pencil drawings to oil paint, the contrast in between the two mediums, it allows me to spend all day doing art, with brakes in  between. When I work on pencil drawings, it allows me to focus on shadow, paying attention where the light falls, proportion, and building a drawing skill, it always benefits anyone as a Tattoo Artist. When I’m having fun doing oil painting, it allows me to study colour value, learning colour contrast, and discovering which colours look good next to each other, allowing me to know how my tattoos will look like before I work on it.

The Portrait I’m working on, it’s a quiet large one, being so large it allows me to add as many textures and facing features as I wish. The portrait is of Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City.

Why did I choose to paint Pep Guardiola? I chose to paint Pep Guardiola due to his incredible capacity to change football forever with his tactics. A lot of people say, since Pep Guardiola has been a successful manager in football, football has changed a lot. Now its more about passes and there’s no dribbling, and football  is not the way it used to be. I believe everything changes, and it has an evolution, so you rather catch the wave or get left behind.

Even knowing not everyone agrees with Pep Guardiola’s approach to football, and makes him responsible for the change in the game, I still can see beauty in his way of playing, I still can see intelligence in his game play and organisation. Tactics is  still a form of art in my eyes, even knowing it could look robotic from time to time, I still see the invention of tactics a form of art. I do believe football is not as free as it used to be, however, football is a lot of more a serious business as it used to be, so nowadays teams play for the result, and the philosophy is win or win.

One of the other reasons I’m working on a Pep Guardiola portrait is due to my love of Sports, I was looking for an inspiration from books, about focus and dedication, and the books recommended by google were usually from athletes, from different Sports, one of them was from Kobi Bryant “The Mamba Mentality” I’m not in to basketball as much as I’m in to football, however, the amount of inspiration that is in that book, is beneficial to whatever job you do or whatever career you want to pursuit, or if you are looking to find focus, purpose and dedication.

Tattoo Work in Manchester

What I have been up to lately

I can only be grateful to be back in Manchester. I’m loving working at Odin’s Eye Tattoo, it’s the studio I needed to be in. When you work with Tattoo Artist’s who have been tattooing just as long as you, in my case 18 years, it feels like everyone is in the same level with the way we see tattooing. I have worked with artist’s, who have been only tattooing for a few years, and the work ethic and philosophy is different. So it is important to surround yourself with artists who believe in what you believe, so you can grow together.

In this post, I would like to share what I have been up to lately. I would like to share this back Tattoo I worked on a female client, the image is from a video-game character. It was a tattoo full of line work, so I had to really take my time on it. When I line a tattoo, I see it like sculpting the line, so a lot of patience is required, my client was so chilled and patient so that made me feel comfortable.

After the first session was done, her back was quiet sore, as expected, so I was sure to book a second touch up session, to be able to see the lines healed, and have the opportunity to touch up, or refill some of the lines, and make sure everything was as best as it could be.

So that video is after the second session was done and healed. I really appreciate having patient clients who allows me to take my time, and go back to the tattoo, I treat a tattoo like a painting, where I go back to it, and push and pull what needs to be adjusted. And seeing the Tattoo healed, it really allows me to see the peace in a different perspective, and that allows me to give more to the client.

The second tattoo in the video, is a football badge, from Tottenham Hotspur FC, they have recently won a trophy after so long. I do like Tottenham Spur,  My client got tattooed by me last year, when I still had my tattoo studio in Whitefield, Manchester. He had tattooed his kid name on him, and mentioned about the Tottenham badge tattoo. He messaged me a few weeks after they won the title, saying that now was the right time to get it done, I believe that, when you want a tattoo, or when you are considering getting tattooed, you will know when the right time comes.

That’s why when I get a client just coming in to the studio unsure about what they want, it is a bit hard work as they don’t have any ideas, but if you are patient, and treat them right, even start talking to them, it allows them to talk about themselves therefore you start getting ideas for their Tattoo. So even knowing the client mite come in the studio with no idea about what they want, just for the fact that they came in the studio, and felt that you cared about what you do, and treat them right, they will be back to see you, when the time is right.

Chicano style of tattoos, is a Style I like to do, specially being Latin American, I appreciate and enjoy doing South American related art. Chicano style of Tattoos were made to represent Latin American outlaw culture in the beginning, however, now it has become a Tattoo style and culture that’s collected by tattoo fans all over the world.

You do not have to be Latin American to enjoy and collect Chicano related tattoos. Art is to be enjoyed by whoever appreciates it, and Chicano tattoos, has increased in popularity over the years. I do see a lot of youngsters choosing Chicano style tattoos for their full arm sleeve or full leg sleeve.

With this tattoo I want to share with you guys, it was my latest Chicano tattoo project, the client requested a female Chicano style face on his head, with a Cherub, holding a gun, in the back of his head.

When the client first walked in the studio, he requested, a the full top of his head done in one session, and I had to inform him that tattoos can not be rushed in order to have it done in one session. He agreed with it, and I was happy to look in to his request.

First I did a photoshop idea with my iPad to show him, I believe giving the client a small taste of what they are going to have done, this process can put the client at ease, and as artists, we have to understand that something that’s clear in our mind is not going to be clear in somebody else’s head. We are creative as artist’s and we are very visual, however, not every client has a creative mind set like us, therefore, helping the client with a photoshop idea of how their Tattoo is going to look, it can help with the client’s confidence and peace of mind.

Starting the tattoo, I was very impressed how good the ink was going in his head, it was a lot more natural than I thought. So in the end we did manage to finish the top of his head in one session, however, for the tattoo being on his head, I was concerned about how it was going to heal, so I made sure to book a touch up session before he left the studio.

The tattoo healed well for the first session, however, I was glad we booked the touch-up session, as I could push and pull my values, and add contrast.

So in that video you are watching the tattoo is fully healed, after I also added a cherub in the back of his head, holding a gun. Is overall a very complete Tattoo on his head and he sat really well for it.

Hello Everyone, thanks for reading my blog, in this post I would like to share one of my latest oil paintings I have been working on.

Since moving back to Tattoo in Manchester, I have been getting requests for football t-shirts to be painted and framed, of course Manchester is a big City, and its divided by one of the best football teams in the Premier League, so the requests have increased.

 Since I have moved to the UK, I used to watch Manchester United play, they always had a team with the capability to be fighting for the Premier League title for years. As we know Manchester United have not been doing that great recently, but their history in football is admirable, and loving or hating them, you have to respect their history in English football, and their history could teach us lessons about success.

When I get requested to paint a Manchester United football t-shirt, I always get asked to paint the classic players, as they have already left their mark on the club, and in this case I was happy to be painting Cristiano Ronaldo.

Some footballers are born with a talent, and some a born with the capability to learn and develop the technics required to be a footballer, and Cristiano Ronaldo for sure is the best footballer to have ever played the game, who was not born with a natural talent, and who, by dedication, focus, the hunger to learn, was capable to become one of the greatest footballers who ever lived.

I do enjoy following Sports, I believe we can learn about dedication, perseverance and many other aspects of life. I have recently bought a book by “Kobi Bryant” called “The Mamba Mentality” which it guides the reader to all details of his work ethic in order ton achieve greatness.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Kobe Bryant are pretty similar with levels of dedication and focus, of striving to be the best at a very high level of competitiveness in a Sport.

Cristiano Ronaldo have for sure left a legacy, that’s worth following and leaning from, from a Sportsmanship point of view or professional life in general, I’m sure you can learn something from Cristiano Ronaldo and be able to imply those lessons to your everyday life, for who is interest in making a difference in whatever you are interested in.
